Gold-plated or Silver-plated Terminals: How to Select the Appropriate Contact Coating for All Industrial Control Switches?

2026 07/09

When purchasing control switches for machinery, automobiles and automation equipment, mechanical designers and purchasing managers often overlook the selection of terminal coatings. This detail directly affects the stability of the circuit and the lifespan of the components. Regardless of the product series, from interlock piston safety switches for lawn tractors and forklifts, heavy-duty toggle switches to durable stainless steel Chinese metal switches, all of our products follow the same coating selection principle. Correctly choosing the coating can significantly reduce signal interruption failures and significantly lower long-term maintenance costs.

As a Chinese factory that produces plunger safety switches, toggle switches and metal buttons, we offer two standard terminal plating options for all switch series. For all models of plunger safety switches, instantaneous toggle switches and vandal-proof metal buttons, there are significant differences in load and environmental performance between silver plating and gold plating. The silver-plated terminals are suitable for high-power load scenarios: capable of withstanding 5A 120VAC or 28VDC, and operating at 2A current under 250VAC. Therefore, silver plating is the preferred choice for high-current main circuits, such as power control circuits for large current switches and power cut-off switches for large equipment.

The gold-plated terminals can only handle a maximum load of 0.4VA and have a maximum voltage rating of 20V. Nevertheless, the gold coating still provides a more stable electrical conductivity for low-current precision signal circuits. The core advantage of gold lies in its natural resistance to oxidation and corrosion. The terminals will not form an insulating oxide layer during long-term storage or daily use, effectively extending the lifespan of the entire switch.
For low-signal detection and precision control equipment, gold-plated terminals are our standard configuration. This series includes seat detection type lawn mower push rod safety switches, small metal buttons on the dashboard, and instantaneous signal switching switches. These products mainly operate in weak trigger signal environments and often encounter humid and temperature-differential conditions. Silver contacts will oxidize over time, causing unstable disconnection, while gold-plated contacts can maintain stable on-off signal output for thousands of action cycles.

Gold-plated terminals remain an ideal choice for high-power control applications, including IP68 waterproof large-load switching switches, vehicle main circuit switching switches, and large cabinet power metal switches. Our engineering team can customize the appropriate terminal coating for each series based on the customer's circuit voltage, current, and working environment. All finished switches must pass strict conductivity, dielectric strength, and humidity aging tests before delivery. Whether you order an interlock plunger safety switch, an industrial switching switch, or a stainless steel waterproof metal button, matching the appropriate terminal coating according to the actual circuit requirements can effectively prevent components from prematurely failing and reduce complaints in equipment after-sales service.
